Travel / Car parking

NOTE that PARKING will be at LOCHSIDE car park (ie not the usual Balvormie car park). If this car park is full, then please use the visitor centre car park or the deer park car park.

From the North - in Linlithgow High Street, follow signs to Beecraigs Country Park. Nearing the top of the hill, turn left at the junction, then right - following signs to the visitor centre/caravan park. Don't turn into the visitor centre car park but keep going down the hill past the deer park. Lochside car park is on the right at the bottom of the hill.

Times

Start from 11am-12pm (everyone starts at a different time so you can't follow). If you would like to avoid the queue at 11am, then come a little later. Start and finish are next to car park. Courses close at 2pm.

Courses

Ideal for all ages and abilities, families, children and runners welcome. Loads of help is available and no experience is necessary.

  • Yellow: Ideal for under 16s. Approx 2km.

  • Orange: Perfect for adults who haven't done any/much before. Approx 3km, allow up to an hour to complete!

  • Green: Harder navigation, for those who have done it before or who are in search of a challenge! Approx 4.5km with hills.

  • Blue: Harder navigation, for those who have done it before or who are in search of a challenge! Approx 7km with hills.

New to orienteering?

It's a trail run (and often an off-trail run!) with a difference - an orienteering race doesn't follow a set route. Instead you have to visit a series of checkpoints and register each one with an electronic timing chip. The checkpoints are marked by flags on the ground and may be along paths, earth banks, streams or anywhere around the area. The challenge is to race between each one, choosing your own route between the checkpoints, using a special orienteering map (which you get to keep too). Why not come and give it a go?

What do I need?

It's an outdoor sport, dress for the weather conditions. We'll give you a map, lend you a compass and an electronic card for recording your time.

Cost

  • Adult/Group £6
  • Under 20s £4

IMPORTANT SAFETY and COURSE INFORMATION

All participants:

  1. Please take care crossing car parks.

  2. The caravan park, mountain bike skills area and the visitor centre are out of bounds - they are marked as such on the map, please do not cross them.

  3. The fast mountain bike trail is a forbidden route - it is marked with pink crosses, which means it should not be used to run along as a route choice. If you are crossing across the trail, please check for any mountain bikes first as they cycle very fast.

For the Green/Blue courses only: 4. There are some large crags marked on the map and some routes go close to them, please take care in these locations.

  1. There are several road crossings, these are not marshalled, please cross with care. Roads are forbidden routes and marked as such on the map - they should not be used as route choices and only crossed with care.

  2. Please do not cross fences and fields but use the marked crossing points. There is ongoing construction work in one field, this is marked as out of bounds and should not be crossed - please use the path around the side of the construction site.
