Further Information

We have adapted some of the permanent orienteering courses at Muiravonside and introduced some temporary markers which will be there over the course of this weekend and open to residents of Falkirk Council Area or West Lothian (in line with the 5 miles beyond LA guidance) - in the form of a "Semi Permantnet Orienteering Course" for 1 weekend only! There are no SI units or timing equipment in place - we do encourage you to track your route and time with a GPS watch or a smartphone app - and send the GPX files to Paul Hammond who will collate and compare so you can see how your splits / routes vary compared to others etc - but this is a friendly opportunity to get some exercise and keep your skills up rather than a formal competition.

We've got a GREEN course which is nominally 4.5km long with 180m of climb. As there are so many paths, fences, rivers etc at Muiravonside its not really a TD5 level course because there is always going to be something to catch you or relocate on if you get the course wrong - its really a long TD4 course. You will need to climb over a small fence (no barbed wire) - and you will be almost guaranteed to get muddy with the current weather!

There is an ORANGE course, at 2.2km with 80m of climb. This is at TD3 level. There are no public roads required on the route so it may be suitable for unaccompanied children but beware from the finish to the car park would involve walking alongside/crossing the main driveway through the park. The control descriptions are in symbol format only - you will find translations here https://www.maprunner.co.uk/resources/Maprunner-map-symbols-2017.pdf

There is a YELLOW course, 1.5km with 50m m of climb. This is at TD2 level, and is away from all roads including the access roads to the car park so hopefully will allow for younger kids to do some "off the lead" orienteering and enjoy some freedom. Obviously there is a huge river runs through muiravonside as well as some small ponds and this course does go near these so decide about the suitablity to let them go unsupervised depending on your own children's experience. This course essentially sticks to the paths, but at Muriavonside they can be quite confusing but I've tried to keep them in a very contained area so it is easy for them to reset and for you to find them if they go wandering. There are both text and symbol based control descriptions on the map.

Maps and start details etc will be published late the evening. Courses will open at 10am Sat (don't start before then or the controls may not all be marked!) and will remain open until 10:30 on Tuesday (1st Dec).

Please read the participant instructions carefully for details about control markers, start finish location, SAFETY information, COVID precautions, and perhaps some helpful hints for competitors on the yellow course. And some information about parking, areas to avoid, and some trees that have grown a lot since the map was made - so ALL PARTICIPANTS should read the briefing which will be distributed with the maps info carefully!
